MAYOR GOODWIN SHARES 11/23 UPDATES REGARDING RESTORATION OF GAS SERVICE TO WEST SIDE, RESOURCES FOR IMPACTED RESIDENTS

(Charleston, W. Va.) – Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin shares updates (11/23) regarding the restoration of gas service to the West Side and resources for impacted residents as work continues through the Thanksgiving holiday.  

“On this Thanksgiving holiday, we give thanks to the many members of our community who have come together to support our West Side residents – checking on neighbors, helping serve meals, going door-to-door, distributing needed supplies and meals, and working together during a very difficult time for many of our families,” said Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin. “Thank you for lending a helping hand and embodying the spirit of compassion and community that defines the essence of this holiday.”

Thursday’s updates included:

  • Mountaineer Gas Company (MGC) crews will continue working through Thanksgiving and the weekend. As of yesterday afternoon, gas service had been restored to approximately 1,120 customers, and approximately 95% of the 46 miles of affected gas line.
    • Residents will be seeing more crews going door-to-door through the weekend.
    • Updates from MGC can be viewed at www.facebook.com/mountaineer.gas.
  • Meals will be available to community members at the following locations. 
    • Manna Meal will be serving a Thanksgiving lunch meal at the old Save A Lot parking lot at the corner of Virginia St & Park Ave, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
    • The annual Frank Veltri Thanksgiving Dinner will take place at St. George Orthodox Church at 190 Court Street. Folks can eat in from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. or pick up to-go meals from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.  All are welcome. 
    • West Virginia Black Pride Foundation will host Friendsgiving Dinner at the Center at 1442 ½ 3rd Ave at 4 p.m.
  • United Way of Central WV has fielded a total of 847 calls, 35 texts, dozens of emails and nearly 250 walk-ins since Monday, November 13. Requests, yesterday, included heaters, blankets, cooking appliances and food.  
    • The United Way team is available at 304.340.3500 and 211 to troubleshoot any needs – heaters, blankets, meal delivery, etc.— today (Thanksgiving) and through the holiday weekend.  
  • The American Red Cross Appalachia Region, in collaboration with the Charleston Fire Department has served 213 people, installed 206 alarms, and made 92 homes safer.  
    • Anyone needing a smoke alarm can call 304.340.3650 or visit www.bit.ly/FreeSmokeAlarms. 
    • Anyone needing a carbon monoxide detector can call the United Way of Central West Virginia at 304.340.3500 or call 211.
  • West Virginia Health Right has distributed 2,340 meals, 747 heaters, 527 electric blankets, 102 regular blankets, 532 cooking appliances, and 150 hats/gloves.
    • WVHR will provide dinner service on Friday (11/24) from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m., Saturday (11/25) from noon – 2 p.m., and Monday – Friday of next week from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.  Remaining supplies (blankets, heaters, cooking appliances) may be picked up during this time.
  • To report water outages, folks should call 1-800-685-8660 so that West Virginia American Water can put a service order into the system.
